Your first social: what to expect

A social is a party where people dance together for fun. Nobody is marking you, and everyone on the floor once had a first night too.

When you arrive

Find a spot near the edge of the dance floor and watch for a few songs. You will see dancers of every level, from people on their first night to people who have danced for years. Our London Bridge parties are free, outdoors and open to everyone aged 14 and over (under 18s with a parent’s or guardian’s permission).

Asking and saying yes

Anyone can ask anyone to dance. A smile and “Would you like to dance?” is enough. You can say “No, thank you” to any dance, without a reason, and so can the other person. A thank you at the end of the song is all that is needed.

If you are new

Tell your partner it is your first time. Good dancers keep it simple for you. One song is a complete dance, so you can stop and rest whenever you like.

Looking after each other

Keep the floor kind: watch out for the couples around you, keep a soft hold, and stop if anything feels uncomfortable. If something worries you, speak to the Estrella Dance team on the night.

Before the night

Learn a basic step and one turn, and you are ready. The Estrella Dance App has short lessons you can practise at home.
