How to practise at home without a partner

You do not need a partner to get better. A few minutes on your own, most days, makes a real difference on the dance floor.

Make a little space

Clear a small space, put on shoes that turn easily, and warm up for a minute: shoulders, hips and ankles. Stop if anything hurts.

Start with the basic step

Walk the basic step to a slow song. Keep your knees soft, your steps small and your weight over the front of your feet. Count out loud for one song, then dance the next one without counting.

Add one thing at a time

Pick one move or one detail, such as a turn, a clean tap or relaxed shoulders, and repeat it for a few minutes. Small, regular practice beats one long session a week.

Use a mirror or your phone

Watch yourself in a mirror, or film a short clip on your phone. Look at one thing only: your timing, your posture or your feet. Then dance it again.

Practise following and leading on your own

Followers can practise turns and keeping balance. Leaders can practise the timing of their preparation and keeping a steady frame. Everyone can practise musicality: dancing slower and faster with the music.

Keep going

The Estrella Dance App gives you short lessons to practise with and keeps track of your practice. Teacher feedback on your practice videos is coming soon.
